MSU internship coordinator L.A. Dickerson

When it comes to getting a job or internship no one knows recruiters like Michigan State internship coordinator Lori Anne Dickerson.

Dickerson, a former crime reporter for the Detroit Free Press, sat down with Communication Arts Sciences students to discuss how to prepare for their dream job outside of the classroom.

She highlighted the importance of job-shadowing. Dickerson said shadowing professionals can give students insight into what fields best suite their interests. This will also pave the way for networking opportunities, which could lead to mentoring, letters of recommendation,  etc.

Dickerson also emphasized the used of social media. Web sites such as Facebook and Twitter can make it easier to cover beats as a reporter or to publicize events as a public relations specialist.

Internships are crucial to gaining experience and for finding work after graduation. If you would like to speak with Dickerson about internship opportunities or finding a mentor, you can contact her at dicker22@msu.edu.

MSUABJ President Antonice Strickland with legendary Ms Robin D. Stone

Homecoming weekend; a time when the alum of Michigan State return to check up on campus, participate in old events such as tailgating, and we smack up some unfortunate team in football. It’s a time for memories and giving back, and one illustrious alumnus did just that.

Detroit native and MSU alum Robin D. Stone came to talk to the journalists of MSU at a program hosted by the Michigan State Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists on Friday, October 21. Stone is the author of No Secrets, No Lies: How Black Families Can Heal from Sexual Abuse (Broadway Books, 2004), the founding editor-in-chief of Essence.com, former president of the New York chapter of NABJ and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Stone’s various accomplishments throughout her professional career earned her the Outstanding Alumni Award from MSU in 2004. During the program, she stressed the importance of giving back to your alma mater. Stone says she has been donating to MSU’s School of Journalism since she graduated.
Stone also discussed launching Essence.com and being Black in a White newsroom. At the end of her speech, she answered the student’s questions. She was very well received, and we hope she comes back to visit again soon.
